Recently I have been made aware of several incidents where the permit-to-carry holder has accidentally shot themselves in the leg with their firearm. All of these incidents have similar contributing factors. In every case, the individual was driving or sitting, their firearm was not in a holster or other securing device, and the firearm was usually sitting in their lap. These individuals, through what I can only assume is poor weapons handling, causing a life-threatening injury. As instructors, we always try to focus on the topic at hand for the class to stray on topic and keep moving in the learning process.
But the simple fact is that if you are going to carry a lethal tool to protect yourself and your loved ones, then you should also carry with you a first aid kit capable of addressing life-threatening bleeding and the knowledge on how to use it. You have to provide care for not only a loved one but also yourself if you arr injured,
take a stop the bleed class
learn how a tourniquet works
learn direct pressure and wound packing
The life you save might be your own.
